Although varied experimental artists such as The Haters, Sonic Youth, and
Einstürzende Neubauten are major influences, Vinyl Dog Toy's biggest influence
comes from the band's own hometown. The burgeoning noise scene of Calgary
Alberta inspired the future members of Vinyl Dog Toy to finally get to work on
an experimental/noise project of their own. The idea had been kicking around
in their minds for several years now, but the sheer excitement of seeing acts
such as Suicide Bomber, The Hobophobes and Protagonist/Antagonist convinced
the four-piece that the time had come to focus on Vinyl Dog Toy, and put their
other - more conventional - bands on the back-burner.
The band was officially formed in late 2010. Their first foray into the world
of noise was a team effort with 1/0 to record the track "Lizard Eye" for the
Feedback compilation cassette tribute to Smegma. Recording for their first
official full-length album began shortly afterwards. It was decided that the
album would be recorded quickly, and with very little post production. As a
result, the album largely consists of live improvised recordings, edited down
from several hours worth of material recorded over the course of just two
months. The resulting album, "The Secret To Health, Wealth & Happiness",
paints a bizarre - and sometimes harsh - sonic landscape that throws at least
a couple of curve-balls.
